Gearbox remapping in Kent, on your driveway.

Your automatic gearbox has its own control unit, and the software in it is set up cautiously at the factory. A gearbox remap gives you faster, firmer shifts, higher torque limits and a manual mode that actually holds the gear you chose, all matched to the engine map so the two are not fighting each other. We do it at your home or work.

Which gearbox

Three families, one visit

VW, Audi, SEAT, Skoda, Cupra

DSG and S tronic

These are the dual-clutch boxes used across the VW group, in six and seven speed, wet and dry clutch versions. Shift speed, torque limits, clutch pressure and launch behaviour are all set in the software, so all of them can be changed. More on DSG remapping.

BMW and others on ZF

ZF 6HP and 8HP, with xHP

These are the six and eight-speed ZF automatics fitted to most BMWs, the 8HP from 2010 and the 6HP before it. xHP is the established software for both, with staged maps and features you pick from. More on BMW xHP remapping.

Mercedes, Ford, Jaguar, Land Rover

Everything else we can reach

We also cover Mercedes 7G and 9G-Tronic, Ford Powershift and the ZF units in Jaguar and Land Rover. Not every box has a file yet, so put the registration in the form and we will tell you straight.

What changes

What a gearbox remap does, feature by feature

Not every feature applies to every gearbox, and you choose which ones you want. Here is the full list. You pay for the file, not for each feature.

  • Faster gear shifts - the box completes each shift in less time. You feel it most on the paddles and under full throttle.
  • Raised torque limiters - the box lets the engine deliver what a remap gives it rather than clamping it in the lower gears.
  • Raised clutch pressure - on dual-clutch boxes the clutches clamp harder to cope with the extra torque, which also protects the clutch packs.
  • Full manual mode - in manual, the box holds the gear to the limiter and does not change up for you.
  • Kickdown delete - a floored throttle no longer forces a downshift in manual mode.
  • Auto upshift delete - the box stays in the gear you chose instead of changing up at a set point.
  • Soft limiter delete - some boxes impose an early, soft rev limit. This lifts it to the engine's own limiter.
  • Shift points and adaptation - the points where the box changes gear in Drive and Sport are tuned to the engine map, and the adaptations are reset so it learns the new file cleanly.
How it works

From enquiry to shifting properly

1

Tell us the car

Send us the registration, which gearbox it has, and whether the engine is already remapped or will be. The form is below.

2

A fixed price, usually the same day

We price the gearbox file, and the engine file too if you want both done and matched in one visit.

3

We send you a booking link

Choose a date and a time that suits you, at home or at work.

4

We come to you

We read and keep the original TCU file, write the new one, reset the adaptations and road test it through every mode. On its own it takes around an hour.

Fixed price, before anyone turns up

Get my price

Tell us the registration, which gearbox, and whether the engine is remapped. We come back with a fixed price, usually the same day, and a booking link if you want to go ahead.

Gearbox remapping, the questions we get asked

Do I need an engine remap as well?

No, but the two are designed to go together. An engine remap raises the torque, and the gearbox file raises the limits that would otherwise clamp it. If we do both in one visit they are matched to each other. Done separately they still work, and we will tell you honestly whether a gearbox file on its own is worth it for your car.

Will it make the gearbox jerky?

Not in Drive. Comfort mode stays comfortable. The firmer, faster shifts come in Sport and manual, which is where you want them. A file that makes the box jerky everywhere is simply a bad file.

Is it safe for the gearbox?

Yes. Our files stay within what the clutch packs and the mechatronics can take. On a dual-clutch box, raising the clutch pressure actually protects the clutches under the higher torque rather than wearing them out. The real risk is adding torque without raising the pressure to match.

Does it affect my warranty or the MOT?

The MOT does not test gearbox software. A manufacturer warranty on the gearbox can be affected in the same way an engine remap affects the engine warranty, so read this first if the car is under warranty.

How much does it cost?

We quote it on the car, because the boxes and the files vary a great deal. Send the registration and you get one fixed figure before anything is booked.

Backed by JF Automotive

Remaps UK is the mobile arm of JF Automotive, a Maidstone workshop that has been tuning cars for thirty years. The files, the calibration work and the rolling road behind your job are theirs. If a job turns out to need a ramp or a dyno session rather than a driveway, it goes to them, and you are not passed to a stranger.
