In an already saturated market place the Remap Engine Tuning industry has already seen its fair share of winners and losers, from catastrophic engine failure to minor niggles, all are unwelcome in the Remap Engine Tuning Arena. With so many companies out there it is difficult to know where to even start, never mind who you chose to trust with your £50,000 new motor car.

With new companies popping up almost over night, it really is a mine field, get it wrong and it could leave you sat on the hard shoulder in a cloud of black smoke with your head in your hands wondering where you went wrong.

One company out there is claiming it wants to try and change all this, the company is called Remaps UK and it is based in Cheshire. Remaps UK is a remap engine tuning company based in the North west of England, providing a mobile engine tuning service across the UK . They consider themselves the experts when it comes to economy and performance remap engine tuning.

Company owner and technical director, Andy who has been involved in the tuning, programming and automotive industry for the last 20 years was asked about his experiences from within the remap tuning industry, he said “I have lost count of how many calls I get a month from customers who have picked price over product and found themselves with a car that won’t start or even worse a blown engine…” he went on to say “ This really is a highly skilled industry with far to many individuals setting up shop, buying the kit from a particular ‘online’ auction site with a disk full of various generic remap files, building a website and buying a ‘Pay & Go’ mobile phone and now consider themselves a Remap Engine Tuning Expert…and the thing is they get away with it, walk away with your money, leaving the unlucky ones out of pocket with a broken car sat on the drive”

Pushed further about the remap engine tuning industry Andy revealed some shocking stories of customers who have contacted Remaps UK with there remap problems and experiences, and also those Remaps UK have worked with, to help get back on the road, he said “ we had one particular customer, really nice gentleman, called Remaps UK for a performance remap engine tuning quote, he stated he had found a cheaper company who would do the work for him, after explaining how we do things here at Remaps UK, explaining all our remap files are live and custom written on the day and are not a generic file, that we also have a £2 million Royal Sun Alliance backed warranty and that all our files are created by us, developed by Remaps UK here in the UK, he still chose to use the other cheaper company” he continued “ a week later the same customer contacted us here at Remaps UK stating that the remap engine tune that was done by the other company wasn’t a total success, in fact the whole ordeal was a complete failure, resulting in the vehicle not starting at all!” he added “the said remap company, allegedly remap tuned the car, which was in fact an 2008 Audi A6 2.0 TDi 140 bhp, then told the customer it needed to reboot and would take 30 minutes to complete, took the customers money and left the premises…the customer tried the vehicle, which then failed to start, tried to contact the said company and found the number was out of service!”

Andy at Remaps UK went on to explain, stating “ The customer was understandably in some distress about the whole ordeal, he was also annoyed that he’d allowed this to happen” , “we had to do a total rebuild of the ECU from scratch….” and added “ luckily for the customer we’re probably one of the only few remap engine tuning companies in the country who have the expertise do this and what’s more we stood by our initial price quoted, even though our work was doubled…we felt it was important to go the extra mile for the customer without the extra cost, plus he’d already had enough problems for one week, it was now up to us to put the smile back on his face…we think he learnt his lesson ”, “ needless to say the customer was over the moon with the finished result and very, very, thankful”

Other problems are also common place he went on to say “ we have visited cars with the wrong map installed, we found a remap file for an Audi 1.9 tdi on a vehicle that should have had an Audi 2.0 tdi file, a Mercedes Benz SL55 amg with a remap file for a SL500, the list goes on, but one thing the customer probably wouldn’t find out about is the fact that we have had previously remapped vehicles in that have had the vehicle immobiliser codes erased! Which means anyone with a key could start your car” he added “we even had a BMW 330d which had been previously remapped by another company, the customer still had the flat spot in the rev range that he wanted removing in the first place, when we analyzed his ECU we found no upgraded had been installed whatsoever even though he’d paid for one! Now that’s just a ridiculous exercise in maximising profit at any expense, this really annoys us here at Remaps UK, and is potentially damaging what is inherently a great industry”

This story is becoming all too common, but what is being done to stop it? How can this be avoided in the first place, we asked Andy what the future of remap tuning was likely to be and what Remaps UK as a company were doing to bring back customer confidence. He said “ Good honest business, in short, we invest heavily into our equipment which allows us to produce and develop what we consider the highest quality remap engine tuning files available” he also added “through painstaking hours of testing we have come up with and un locked some of the most hard to tune vehicles out there in the industry, with fantastic results…improved economy, reduced carbon footprint and increased performance, these are all achievable with a reputable Remap Tuning company”, “ the key to good remap tuning is time invested and experience gained through rigorous testing and development, which all in all costs money, without the investment, we could not produce the high calibre remap files that we do” , ”with big advances in Engine management technology the new breed of remap tuning is becoming more and more intricate, you really need to know what you are doing, ask questions to see how far the Remap Engine tuners knowledge goes, what the tuners background is? How long have they been remapping? all really simple things, but rarely get asked once the customer has been offered the deal of a lifetime. If the deal sounds too good to be true it usually is…” he added “ultimately the choice is down to the customer, you have the right to choose, just make sure it’s the right choice”

So what started out as an insight into the dark and gloomy world of Remap Engine tuning looks set to be a brighter place, with the right company, if chosen carefully? Andy went on to explain “ the benefits of remap tuning far out weigh the minority of budget end low grade remap tuners out there…” he continued by saying “with a high quality remap upgrade customers can expect increased throttle response, better fuel economy, reduced carbon emissions, better performance and smoother power delivery, just make sure you pick a company you are comfortable with and you will become a happy member of the remap tuned vehicle club”

Well it’s been nearly one month

since Remaps UK took delivery of our new BMW E92 335d and we are mightily

impressed so far with this hot, sleek performer.

You can’t deny that even with stock settings the BMW 335d is a force to be reckoned with, putting much more exotic vehicles to shame with it’s awesome twin turbo 3.0 diesel engine.

So what’s the story so far….

In stock for we thought the 335d performed reasonably well, a slight lag of the mark, with great pull through the mid range and ever so slightly lacking at the top end of the rev range, but if were honest this was really being a bit picky!

Average figures for the BMW 335d,  on the mpg and efficiency side were ranging from low 30’s for mixed driving and 38-41 whilst cruising. All in all a very respectable set of results from a vehicle producing a claimed 286bhp with stock settings from BMW.

So what next for the BMW 335d….

We have just finished our first part of the project and started off with the remap option we call ‘the Blend’. This style of upgrade we used on the 335d is a bespoke custom tune that gives the driver the best of both worlds, seeing a marked improvement in mpg and bhp, or the best of both worlds. Bang for buck we think this is the best value for money remap option available!

So how did the BMW 335d perform after its Remap.

Astounding! Like the BMW 330d we projected before, the difference between stock and ‘the blend’ remap option is fantastic. Zero lag, mid range punch is phenomenal pulling cleanly and strongly right through the rev range with no hint of a flat spot anywhere. Very Very impressive!

MPG figures went up to 36-38 normal mixed driving and saw 48 mpg on motorway runs (we feel these are modest figures as when we tested the 335d we had -8 degrees!!) And all this from a car producing 325 bhp!

The remap option ‘blend’ on the 335d is perfectly placed and developed for everyday driving with a focus on increased performance without the sacrifice of reduced efficiency, this is a very hard thing to achieve and has taken a lot of work to get us there, but the results speak for themselves.

Needless to say, everybody fights for the 335d keys at the end of the working day!!

The truth is from here we haven’t got a clue where to go now, what’s next or how to better a fully performance tuned remapped BMW 335d.

This has been said many times in our office, a remapped engine tuned BMW 335d, is ‘all things to all men’ luxurious, sleek, super quick, economical and a hell of a lot of fun.

So what do we choose as our next project car? Where do we go from what we consider the apex tunable diesel, that is the BMW 335d?

If this isn’t making much sense, then let us take you back a few weeks.

A few weeks ago we decided to finally put our BMW 335d through a full engine tune and top of the range live custom remap upgrade. This would put the Remaps UK BMW 335d to the test and hopefully answer some of the long talked about and unanswered questions. Questions like how much bhp can realistically and safely be unlocked by engine tuning and remapping whilst maintaining good economy and German reliability? How many torques could we unlock? Would it break the dyno? All these questions would need to be answered before we could move on in our lives and move away from the sleepless nights of worrying about all the answers! Thankfully the answer wasn’t 42 either!

The first figures that we took from the remap project BMW 335d were the stock ones, in stock form the Remaps UK BMW 335d was an impressive 294 bhp, which was 8 bhp up on the standard BMW 335d figures of 286 bhp, so a thumbs up from BMW there.

We did a total of 9 runs on the dyno before we decided that, 1, the dyno had had enough, 2, the tyres had also had enough and 3,  we wanted to test the results, in a safe and scientific manner of course!

Each run brought us new data and highlighted new areas we could work on in order to achieve the ultimate remap tuning file and produce a blueprint for the BMW 335d remap.

The finished results were nothing short of staggering, it’s important at this point to highlight a few things, we have no doubt there was a hell of a lot more to give from our newly remapped BMW 335d, but felt that the end result was just enough and would still remain safe and reliable for every day use and for years to come (we will never overtune a vehicle in order to quote high figures to get peoples custom! Remaps UK is  all about quality and power delivery).

Ok, so what figures did we get?

just kidding, I’ll cut to the chase….

On the final run the dyno recorded a max engine power  figure for the remapped BMW 335d of 366.5 (flywheel) bhp and max torque figure 734 nm (541.9ft/lb) !!  stock bhp is 286 and 580 nm!

To put that in perspective, and we feel it does need to be, take for example a Ferrari f430, this develops somewhere in the order of  465 nm of torque, or a McLaren F1, 649nm, maybe a  Lamborghini Murcielago , which has 660 nm worth of torques under its bonnet. In fact the only realistically priced and semi attainable vehicle we found that came close was the Dodge Viper SRT-10, which has 759 nm of torque, which subsequently  needs an 8.4 litre V10 engine to produce it! Now our little 3.0 l straight 6 pot diesel sounds pretty impressive don’t you think?

What we have done here at Remaps UK is create a monster, there is no other way to put it, put this thing along side anything short of a supercar and it will honestly without hesitation annihilate it, the performance is biblical, it’s mind bogglingly quick, and to top it all it’s a diesel!  We always knew a remapped BMW 335d was something special, but nothing prepares you for the performance of a remap tuned 335d, especially if it’s a Remaps UK one!

The pull through the gears from standing start is phenomenal  as the waves of torque push you firmly into the seat, third and forth gears are unbelievable, with the now removed speed limiter this thing is capable of 185 mph! Yet drive the car sensibly, which we know is very very hard, and it behaves perfectly, super smooth power delivery  and increased throttle response make it feel like a petrol car,  but with better mpg!

Which brings us onto this next section of the project,.

We filled up the tank on the 335d and recorded a range of 585 miles, and averaged an mpg figure of 38.9. Yes you heard right, 38.9 mpg. All this out of a 370 bhp remap tuned 335d engine! We honestly believe there is not another car in the world that can do this, that performance with that efficiency!

So ,now you see our dilemma, where do we go from here, what else is out there that comes anywhere near to the 335d as an all-rounder.

The short answer is nothing.

Nothing comes even close. BMW have created a fantastic engine with the sleek lines of the E92 coupe to match, and bullet proof German engineering. Remaps UK have taken this image and created a truly unique, one of a kind BMW 335d masterpiece, of which we have grown very very fond of.

This project will be thought of and talked for many years to come, I’m sure.

and it’s been emotional!

For those of you have been following the remap story of the BMW 335d E92 Coupe, it now approaches the end of its run and also marks the end of all the fun we have had with this truly outstanding vehicle.

We covered over 5k miles, from a stock bhp of 286 right through to the performance blend remap which took it to figures to 325bhp. May we also add, that we loved every single mile, every second of it’s 0-60,  in fact we found it very hard to put down the keys, and even harder to sell this on!

The final run for the 335d will involve a full day on the rolling road and a final custom race remap tune to really see what the BMW 335d is a capable of, we know from experience that the straight six is a phenominal engine and that higher figures are more than within the tolerances of the BMW 335d, but as I am sure you are aware, we here at Remaps UK love to get the balance just right in terms of performance and economy. On this remap tune though, we are throwing the rule book out of the window! And i for one can’t wait!!

With the new year bringing in new ECU’s from Audi and VW, the 2.0 TDi engine just gets better and better, that is after it’s been remapped of course by Remaps UK!

With more newly developed remap upgrade option to choose from, Remaps UK has now categorised it remap options it to 3 different groups.

The Economy option, this remap option has a pure focus on mpg improvement, included in this remap will be a smoother power delivery with reduced flat spots, increased throttle response and a small increase in BHP and torque from standard, we also remove the speed limiter as standard on all our remap upgrades, whichever one you choose. This is a great choice for anyone wanting to improve on the standard manufacturers remap ECU settings.

The second option is the remap upgrade we aptly named the Blend, this has proven to be the most popular remap upgrade with Remaps UK customers so far. The blend remap option still maintains a focus on economy with the introduction of a performance twist to give you more mid range pull, which comes in handy for overtaking etc..
All the same benefits are included as the Economy remap option with the added bonus of extra BHP and torque, which can equate to an average increase of 20%!

Then we move on to the performance remap upgrade option, this remap upgrade still considers the economy, but its focus is now primarily on performance. MPG figures should remain the same as stock figures, and should only see a minimal reduction under hard or vigorous driving! The results of the performance leave everyone with a smile on their face.

After these options we get into the remaps Performance Plus arena, and then onto race and track spec remaps, of which we are more than happy to provide.

We decided it was time to migrate the Remaps UK website over to a new tuned quad core server, in doing so we experienced some minor technical hitches which left us with a reduced web presence.

Last month was certainly a busy one with remaps including a performance remap on a E320 cdi Mercedes Benz, a remap performance economy blend on a VW Passat 2.0 TDi 140, a full performance remap on a Peugeot 206 GTi 180, A host of remaps for a VW Golf GTi 2.0 TFSi and VW Golf 2.0 TDi 140 & 170 bhp models.

The Mercedes Benz E320 CDi gave back fantastic results showing a fantastic increase in bhp of 50!! Taking it to a whopping 272 bhp! The customer needless to say was over the moon with his new founded performance and his ability to keep up with the M3 on his weekly run back up the M6! Watch out for the speed cameras John!

The economy performance remap on the VW Passat 2.0 TDi 140 bhp diesels always respond to our live custom remap well, great performance increase of 40 bhp and mpg figures showing an early increase of 6 mpg average. Customer reports of zero flat spots, incredibly smooth power delivery, much more drivable due to better engine and throttle response and a firmly pinned child in the baby seat!

The performance remap on the Peugeot 206 GTi 180 bhp was a great opportunity for us here at Remaps UK to really show of our tuning expertise on a normally aspirated highly tuned vehicle.

The results , needless to say were fantastic, the customer reported on how the car now felt like 3^rd gear was now more like 2^nd gear due to the increased throttle response and lively feel to the vehicle. With the Peugeot now pushing close to 200 bhp after the remap, it’s certainly made an already quick car even quicker!

We certainly get to see a fair few VW Golf’s here at Remaps UK and we most definatley enjoy tuning and remapping them. The VW Golf 2.0 TDi 140 bhp and VW Golf 2.0 TDi 170 bhp have fantastic results after we’ve performed our remap magic on them!

The  performance remap on the VW Golf 2.0 TDi 140 never fails to put a smile on the customers face, I think they are genuinely shocked by the difference, this particular customer couldn’t afford the VW Golf 2.0 TDi 170 bhp version and loved the way it drove. After taking his newly remapped VW Golf 2.0 TDi 140 for a spin, on his return with the all too familiar big grin on his face said it all, with his new remap on the VW Golf 2.0 TDi 140 now pushing out 196 bhp he certainly wasn’t thinking about the VW Golf 2.0 TDi 170 any more!

And finally the remap on the VW Golf  GTi 2.0 TFSi DSG on a performance remap. We love the 2.0 TFSi, whether in the Audi  or the VW, this engine is truly astounding. With figures easily reaching 250 bhp this engine is heavily down tuned in standard form. The customer was shocked at the finished remap of the VW Golf  GTi 2.0 TFSi DSG. He commented on the reduced turbo lag and mid range punch being unbelievable. He even gave us a call a week later claiming it was getting quicker by the day.
